5-HTP

A serotonin precursor with important medicine interactions.

5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is an intermediate the body uses to make serotonin. Supplements are marketed for mood, sleep and appetite, but a biochemical role is not proof that taking more improves those outcomes.

Three things to remember

  1. Small, mixed human studies do not establish a dependable treatment for depression or insomnia.
  2. Compare declared 5-HTP milligrams, not just Griffonia seed extract weight.
  3. Combining it with serotonin-affecting medicines or supplements can be dangerous.

What the evidence can support

Research includes preliminary mood, sleep and appetite studies, but the studies are often small and inconsistent. This leaves considerable uncertainty about who benefits and whether effects last. A positive result on a symptom questionnaire does not establish that a retail capsule treats a diagnosed disorder.

The practical distinction is between an ingredient that participates in a pathway and a treatment demonstrated to improve an illness. Marketing commonly collapses those two ideas. There is no established universal supplement dose for general wellbeing.

5-HTP, Griffonia and combination products

Griffonia simplicifolia seed is a common starting material. A label may declare the extracted 5-HTP itself or a weight of seed extract with a stated percentage. Those numbers are not interchangeable. Capsules, tablets and sprays also differ in serving definition.

A product containing tryptophan, melatonin or several calming ingredients is a separate formulation. The name 5-HTP does not mean serotonin itself, and evidence for one isolated ingredient cannot confirm the benefit of its entire blend.

Read the active amount before the bottle count

Hypothetical label example: 200 mg Griffonia extract standardized to 25% 5-HTP supplies 200 × 0.25 = 50 mg 5-HTP. A different label declaring 100 mg 5-HTP per two capsules supplies 50 mg per capsule. These are arithmetic examples, not suggested doses.

If 60 capsules cost ₹900 and the labelled serving is two capsules, there are 30 servings costing ₹30 each. Without a stated 5-HTP percentage or active amount, a meaningful strength comparison is not possible.

Serotonin interactions are the key risk

5-HTP can interact with antidepressants and other serotonin-affecting drugs; linezolid is a notable example. Combining it with SAMe or St John’s wort also raises concern. A clinician or pharmacist needs the complete medication and supplement list before any combination is considered.

Nausea and other digestive effects are possible. Adding 5-HTP because a prescribed medicine seems ineffective is not a safe substitution for reviewing that treatment. It can also interfere with urinary 5-HIAA testing, so disclose use before testing.

What makes a comparison useful

A useful listing shows active 5-HTP per serving, capsule count, the exact botanical source, other active ingredients and a traceable batch. A purity report should identify the batch and analyte, not merely display a generic laboratory logo.

Price per declared milligram can expose inconsistent labels, but it cannot identify the safest or most effective product. An unclear ingredient amount is an evidence gap, not a bargain. Judge the interaction risk and credibility of the claim before interpreting the price.

Common questions

Is a seed extract automatically gentler?

No. A plant source does not remove the pharmacological effects of its 5-HTP. The declared active amount and other ingredients matter more than the word natural.

Can it replace an antidepressant?

The evidence does not justify replacing prescribed treatment with 5-HTP. Combining the two can introduce a serious interaction rather than improve treatment.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
