Amino acids

Essential, non-essential and conditional: understand protein’s building blocks.

Use this reference alongside the protein guide. Adequate total protein and a varied diet are more useful starting points than buying each amino acid separately.

Three things to remember

  1. Nine amino acids are essential in the diet.
  2. The other eleven can normally be made by the body; some become conditional.
  3. BCAA products contain only three of the nine essential amino acids.

Nine essential amino acids

The nine are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

Eleven normally non-essential amino acids

These are alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine. “Non-essential” refers to usual dietary necessity, not biological importance.

The conditional group overlaps

Some normally non-essential amino acids can become essential in particular circumstances. MedlinePlus lists arginine, cysteine, glutamine, tyrosine, glycine, proline and serine. These are not seven extra amino acids; they overlap the eleven above.

Put protein variety into practice

Try dal with rice or roti, chana or rajma, tofu or other soy foods, and nuts or seeds as part of a varied day. If you eat them, eggs, dairy, fish and meat provide additional options. You do not have to pair complementary proteins in the same meal.

EAA, BCAA and collagen are different

  • EAA means essential amino acids; check which amino acids and how much the serving contains.
  • BCAA means branched-chain amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. These three do not replace all nine essential amino acids.
  • A collagen product should not be your only protein source. Assess the overall protein pattern before adding isolated amino acids.

Common questions

Must I buy an amino-acid supplement?

No. Start by assessing your total protein and food variety. A specialist may advise a particular product for a specific need.

Does non-essential mean I can avoid these amino acids?

No. The term means that your body can normally make them; they still have biological roles.
