Three things to remember
- Some trials report skin improvements, but results depend on study quality and funding.
- Check collagen grams per serving separately from the weight of a flavoured blend.
- Know the animal source and relevant allergens before choosing.
Promising findings, important uncertainty
A 2023 review reported improvements in skin hydration and elasticity across trials of hydrolyzed collagen. A 2025 review found that apparent benefits were not present in its high-quality-study subgroup or studies without pharmaceutical-company funding.
Our interpretation: these results justify cautious expectations. They do not support a guaranteed wrinkle reduction, a deadline for visible results or a “best collagen” claim for every reader.

Make like-for-like comparisons
- Identify the source: fish, bovine or another clearly named animal source.
- Record collagen grams per serving, serving size and servings per pack.
- For combinations, list vitamin C, glutathione, biotin and sweeteners separately.
- A “collagen builder” should be checked for its actual ingredients; do not assume it contains collagen peptides.
Keep a practical skin routine
Sun protection remains part of skin care regardless of whether you buy collagen. Use shade, protective clothing and broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin.

Common questions
Does marine automatically mean superior?
No. Marine describes the source. Compare the actual formulation and relevant clinical evidence rather than treating the source as an effectiveness ranking.
Can I compare scoop weights directly?
Only after checking the label. A scoop can include flavouring and other ingredients; total powder weight may differ from collagen content.
