Digestive enzymes

The right enzyme and activity units matter more than a blend’s weight.

Digestive enzymes help break down components of food. Supplements may contain lactase, proteases, lipases or mixed enzymes, but a long ingredient list does not establish that a product addresses the reason for someone’s symptoms.

Three things to remember

  1. Enzyme activity units, rather than total blend milligrams, describe relevant potency.
  2. Lactase targets lactose; one enzyme does not substitute for another.
  3. Over-the-counter blends are not a substitute for prescribed pancreatic enzyme replacement.

A defined problem needs a defined enzyme

NIDDK describes lactase products as helpful for some people with lactose-intolerance symptoms. Separately, diagnosed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is treated with prescribed pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy. These are different situations.

General bloating does not by itself identify a missing enzyme. A product’s ability to digest a laboratory substrate cannot establish that it improves every digestive symptom. Claims should identify the intended problem and evidence for the actual enzyme preparation.

Match the ingredient to the label

A single lactase product gives a focused comparison. A broad blend may include several enzymes, each requiring its own identity and activity declaration. Sources can be microbial, plant-derived or animal-derived, which matters for allergy and dietary preferences.

Capsules, tablets and preparations mixed into foods are not automatically interchangeable. Product instructions and stability matter; a general instruction from another brand should not replace the directions for the specific preparation.

Do not add unlike enzyme units

Activity units describe performance in specified assays. Labels may use FCC ALU for lactase, HUT for protease or other named units. Milligrams describe mass and do not replace this information.

A hypothetical blend of 100 mg with no activities cannot be ranked against one declaring 3,000 ALU lactase and 10,000 HUT protease. ALU and HUT cannot be added into a meaningful total of digestive strength. Compare the same enzyme using the same unit and assay basis.

Enzyme products can cause adverse reactions

Allergy is possible. Source-specific concerns include pork protein in certain pancreatic preparations and relevant fruit or latex allergies with some plant enzymes. Gastrointestinal discomfort can occur. Persistent or worsening symptoms need assessment rather than repeated changes of blend.

Prescription enzyme treatment for pancreatic insufficiency is managed clinically and taken with meals or snacks as directed. An over-the-counter product with an impressive unit count should not be used to replace that prescription.

A hypothetical lactase cost comparison

Product A costs ₹600 for 60 tablets, each declaring 3,000 ALU. Its cost is ₹10 per tablet. Product B costs ₹900 for 90 tablets at the same declared activity, also ₹10 per tablet.

The larger pack offers no unit-price saving. If either label uses a different assay unit, stop the direct arithmetic until comparability is established. This is a price example, not a recommendation for the number of tablets to take.

Count useful disclosures, not enzyme names

A useful comparison records every enzyme, activity per serving, assay unit, source, expiry, storage and instructions. Where a blend lists only an overall weight, mark activity as unknown. A ten-enzyme list is not necessarily more useful than a clearly specified single enzyme.

Keep the clinical question separate from shopping convenience. A product can be inexpensive and well labelled yet irrelevant to a person’s symptoms. Transparent labelling makes assessment possible; it does not diagnose the problem.

Common questions

Is a 500 mg enzyme blend stronger than a 100 mg blend?

Not necessarily. Activity, enzyme identity and assay conditions matter. Weight alone cannot establish comparative potency.

Can lactase make dairy safe for a milk allergy?

Lactase breaks down lactose; it does not establish safety for a milk-protein allergy. These are different conditions and require different decisions.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
