THE CATEGORY GUIDE

Iron

Check the need for iron before comparing bottle strength.

Iron is required for oxygen transport in blood and muscle. The same category contains modest nutrition supplements and products intended for clinician-directed deficiency treatment; their strengths should not be ranked as though more is always preferable.

Three things to remember

  1. The iron nutrient amount is the comparison figure, not the total weight of ferrous sulfate or another salt.
  2. Fatigue and anaemia do not automatically establish iron deficiency.
  3. Iron products need secure storage because accidental ingestion can seriously harm children.

When the evidence is strongest

Iron supplementation can correct iron deficiency, but not every cause of anaemia responds to it. Foods supply heme and nonheme iron; vitamin C helps absorption of nonheme iron from plant foods.

A comparison page cannot determine the reason for tiredness. If the purpose is treatment, the underlying diagnosis and follow-up determine the product's role. Retail language such as 'blood builder' provides no replacement for that distinction.

Forms and the number to record

Ferrous sulfate and ferrous gluconate are common forms; other preparations also exist. Compare the declared iron amount per serving, then record the form separately.

For example, a hypothetical label could state a compound amount in its ingredient list and a smaller iron amount in its nutrition panel. The smaller nutrient figure is not a contradiction: the compound includes material other than iron. Do not estimate elemental iron from an incomplete product name or borrow a conversion from a different salt.

Reference intake is not a treatment regimen

US/NASEM recommendations for adults 19–50 are 8 mg/day for men and 18 mg/day for women; adults 51 and older have an 8 mg/day reference. Pregnancy has different requirements. These figures describe total intake, not a universal tablet dose.

The US adult upper limit is 45 mg/day from all sources. Clinician-supervised treatment may exceed it, but an unusually strong retail product should not be interpreted as routine nutritional advice.

Hypothetical comparison by the same iron amount

A ₹300 bottle contains 30 tablets, each providing 18 mg iron: ₹10 per 18 mg serving. A ₹360 bottle contains 60 tablets, with two tablets providing 18 mg: 30 complete servings at ₹12.

The second bottle has twice as many tablets but no more labelled servings or total iron: both contain 540 mg. Comparing bottle count alone would hide that. This arithmetic evaluates price and labelling only; it does not establish interchangeability or authorise a treatment change.

Risks and interactions

Iron can cause constipation, nausea and other gastrointestinal effects. Iron-overload disorders such as haemochromatosis require particular caution. Accidental overdose can be fatal to children, making safe storage essential.

Iron can interfere with levothyroxine and levodopa; calcium and acid-suppressing medicines can affect absorption. A pharmacist can check the actual medicine and timing. Check combined products before adding a separate iron tablet.

Choosing with a clear purpose

A useful catalogue entry identifies whether the item is iron alone or a blend, its exact nutrient amount and the amount of any accompanying folate, B12 or vitamin C. A blend's name is not enough to credit it with all those nutrients.

For liquid products, copy the amount per measured millilitre and the supplied measuring device. Drops, spoonfuls and millilitres are not automatically equivalent. Price comparisons should use the labelled measure and preserve that measure when moving between Indian and international products.

Common questions

Can I compare tablets using only the milligrams in the product title?

No. Confirm whether that number refers to iron itself or the complete iron salt.

Is a high-dose iron product better for tiredness?

Tiredness alone does not establish iron deficiency. Stronger products have different risks and may belong to supervised treatment.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
