Nuts

Compare the edible nut, not the shell or coating.

Nuts are sold whole, chopped, shelled, roasted or coated and are used in snacks, cooking and baking. Peanuts are commonly grouped with nuts in shops despite being legumes. Mixed packs can contain very different proportions of each ingredient.

Three things to remember

  1. Compare shelled edible weight when one option includes shells.
  2. Salted, sweet-coated and plain nuts are different recipes.
  3. Individual nut counts are less reproducible than grams because sizes vary.

A useful plant food without a guaranteed outcome

Nuts are included among plant protein foods by University of Illinois Extension. They can add texture and variety to meals, but a small handful is not equivalent to the same weight of isolated protein. The case for eating varied foods does not prove that a particular expensive nut will improve memory or treat a condition. Compare the stated nutrition and actual use instead of treating premium origin as a clinical claim.

Preparation changes what the packet contains

Plain, dry-roasted, oil-roasted, salted and sugar-coated products should be identified before comparison. Chopped pieces may suit baking as well as costly whole kernels. In mixed nuts, check the stated proportions where available; a photograph need not show the balance in every handful. Shell-on nuts can be enjoyable to eat but create a different usable-weight calculation from shelled kernels sold at a higher apparent price.

Use weight to make the comparison fair

Hypothetical example: 200 g of shelled nuts at ₹300 costs ₹150 per 100 g, so a 25 g amount costs ₹37.50. The 25 g is an illustrative portion, not a daily requirement. If a label lists 20 g protein per 100 g, that amount provides 5 g protein. Counting ten nuts gives a less consistent result because the size of kernels and the species vary.

Allergy and choking risks are specific

Tree nuts and peanuts are important food allergens. A mixed pack needs every ingredient considered rather than only the nut pictured on the front. NHS guidance says not to give whole nuts to children under five because of choking risk; texture needs adapting for young children. Keep the original pack information available when decanting nuts, so the ingredients, date and storage directions are not lost in a shared kitchen.

Pay for the form the recipe needs

Hypothetical example: 500 g shell-on nuts at ₹400 sounds cheaper than 250 g kernels at ₹300, but the first bag includes inedible shells. Without its edible yield, the two cannot be fairly ranked by kernel cost. For chopped toppings, broken kernels may offer better practical value than perfectly shaped ones. Inspect pack integrity, recipe and storage directions rather than assuming a large decorative tin contains a superior everyday food.

Common questions

Are mixed nuts automatically more nutritious than a single variety?

They offer variety, but the actual mix and preparation still matter. A mostly sweet-coated mix cannot be judged solely by the number of nut names on the label.

Does roasting automatically make nuts a bad choice?

Preparation alone is too broad a rule. Compare the ingredients, salt, coating and amount eaten, along with the taste and texture you prefer.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
