Vitamin B12

Match the purpose and form before comparing high-dose labels.

Vitamin B12 helps maintain blood and nerve cells and supports DNA synthesis. People with limited animal-food intake or impaired absorption can need particular attention, but a routine energy claim is a different question from correcting deficiency.

Three things to remember

  1. Micrograms are the usual B12 unit; 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg.
  2. A larger label amount is not absorbed in direct proportion.
  3. Deficiency can affect nerves even without obvious anaemia.

Who may benefit and what is not proven

B12 deficiency treatment is important, particularly where intake or absorption is inadequate. Animal foods and reliably fortified foods supply B12; unfortified plant foods are not dependable sources.

B12 does not improve energy or endurance in people already getting enough. A vegan-friendly label establishes a product attribute, not the appropriate regimen or proof that unexplained fatigue is caused by B12 deficiency.

Forms and delivery formats

Cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin and hydroxocobalamin occur in this category. ODS does not establish a universally superior supplemental form. Sublingual products are another format, not automatic proof of greater effectiveness.

Record whether an amount refers to a tablet, measured liquid serving or complete spray serving. A medicine given by injection is a different clinical route and should not be presented as a direct retail substitute based only on matched micrograms.

Reference amount versus product strength

The US/NASEM adult RDA is 2.4 mcg/day from total intake. Pregnancy and lactation references differ. Supplements may supply much larger amounts because only a small fraction of a large dose is absorbed.

That does not make every high-dose product necessary. A label's thousands of percent of a reference value is a mathematical comparison with a small daily requirement, not proof of thousands of percent better health. Dosing for diagnosed deficiency depends on its cause and clinical context.

Hypothetical price calculation

A ₹450 bottle contains 90 tablets with 250 mcg B12 per tablet: ₹5 per labelled serving. A ₹360 bottle contains 60 tablets, with two tablets providing 250 mcg: 30 complete servings at ₹12.

The second bottle contains 7,500 mcg total, while the first contains 22,500 mcg. These are declared pack totals, not absorbed amounts. The calculation compares labelling and price only; it should not be used to change a prescribed regimen or infer equivalence between different routes.

Safety and diagnostic context

B12 is generally well tolerated, but an apparently low-risk supplement should not delay assessment of neurological symptoms. Deficiency can cause nerve damage without anaemia. Metformin and gastric-acid-suppressing medicines can reduce B12 status.

High folate can improve the blood signs of B12 deficiency without correcting its neurological effects. A combination with both nutrients still needs adequate clinical evaluation when symptoms or malabsorption are suspected; the ingredient list alone does not settle the diagnosis.

What a comparison needs to disclose

Show exact form, micrograms per complete serving, servings per pack and all co-ingredients. Keep tablet count separate from serving count, and retain the original units while displaying a consistent comparison unit.

For a liquid or spray, a bottle-volume headline is insufficient without a stated nutrient concentration. A premium 'methylated' claim should not replace evidence about the actual outcome. Price and convenience can be evaluated accurately without claiming that the biggest number is the best choice.

Common questions

Is 1,000 mcg B12 the same as 1 mg?

Yes. The conversion helps compare labels but is not a dose recommendation.

Does a higher B12 amount guarantee more energy?

No. B12 has not shown that benefit in people already getting enough; deficiency is a separate clinical issue.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
