THE CATEGORY GUIDE

Folate

Keep food folate, folic acid and DFE in separate columns.

Folate is vitamin B9, required for DNA synthesis and cell division. Food folate, folic acid and methylfolate belong to the same nutrient category, but label units and evidence are not identical across all forms.

Three things to remember

  1. mcg DFE and mcg folic acid describe different quantities; do not compare them as equal.
  2. Folic acid has established evidence for reducing neural-tube-defect risk around conception.
  3. High folic acid can obscure the blood signs of B12 deficiency while neurological harm progresses.

What folate can do

Correcting inadequate folate supports normal blood-cell formation. Folic acid before conception and in early pregnancy reduces neural-tube-defect risk. This specific evidence should not be diluted into a promise of general disease prevention.

A nutrition product and a clinician-managed pregnancy or deficiency regimen have different purposes. The strongest available evidence for one use does not automatically validate claims about mood, cognition or cancer prevention.

Forms and evidence

Folic acid is commonly used in fortified foods and supplements. Products also use 5-MTHF, called methylfolate. The US public-health recommendation for people who could become pregnant specifies 400 mcg/day folic acid in addition to dietary folate; an MTHFR variant does not by itself erase that recommendation.

A methylated label is therefore not a reason to assume that every outcome studied with folic acid has been established with the substituted form.

Reading DFE correctly

The US/NASEM adult RDA is 400 mcg dietary folate equivalents daily; pregnancy is 600 mcg DFE and lactation 500 mcg DFE. These are total-intake references.

One mcg DFE corresponds to 1 mcg food folate or 0.6 mcg folic acid consumed with food. Thus, a hypothetical 240 mcg folic acid with food corresponds to 400 mcg DFE. ODS notes that a formal DFE conversion factor for supplemental 5-MTHF has not been established; do not invent one.

A hypothetical comparison that avoids mixed units

A ₹360 pack contains 60 tablets, each declaring 400 mcg folic acid. It costs ₹6 per tablet. A ₹300 pack has 30 tablets declaring 400 mcg DFE, supplied by 240 mcg folic acid: ₹10 per tablet.

The two '400' numbers are not equal amounts of folic acid. Their prices per 100 mcg folic acid are ₹1.50 and approximately ₹4.17 respectively. That calculation compares declared composition, not a recommended dose or the clinical value of taking either tablet.

Upper limit and safety

The US adult upper limit is 1,000 mcg/day folic acid from supplements and fortified foods, excluding naturally occurring food folate. Do not substitute the DFE number when applying that limit. Clinician-directed use can differ.

High folate can correct B12-deficiency anaemia without preventing neurological damage. Folate also interacts with methotrexate and certain antiseizure medicines; its role differs by the reason the medicine is prescribed, so treatment changes need the prescriber's direction.

What belongs in a comparison

Show folate form, DFE where declared, actual folic acid amount where relevant, serving size and total servings. Retain both label numbers when available rather than discarding the one that appears smaller.

A prenatal formula also needs its complete nutrient list; the folate line alone cannot establish adequacy of the whole product. Clearly distinguish ordinary retail comparisons from specialist treatment strengths, and flag any missing unit or conversion basis as an evidence gap.

Common questions

Does 400 mcg DFE always mean 400 mcg folic acid?

No. DFE adjusts for differences in availability; 240 mcg folic acid consumed with food corresponds to 400 mcg DFE.

Is methylfolate automatically better for everyone?

No. Form choice does not establish superior clinical outcomes for every purpose, and folic-acid public-health guidance remains specific.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
