Three things to remember
- Some cardiovascular risk markers may improve modestly; prevention claims go further than the evidence.
- Compare preparation and named markers before total milligrams.
- Bleeding risk matters with anticoagulants, aspirin and planned surgery.
Realistic benefits and important limits
NCCIH reports possible small reductions in cholesterol, blood pressure or blood glucose in relevant patient groups. Evidence for preventing colds or broadly boosting immunity is much thinner. These findings do not establish that a garlic supplement prevents a heart attack or substitutes for prescribed care.
Look for an outcome matching the claim. A study measuring cholesterol does not validate a claim about infections, and a laboratory antimicrobial experiment does not show that a capsule treats an infection in a person.

Powder, aged extract and oil
The preparation is part of the ingredient identity. Record whether a label describes garlic powder, aged garlic extract or oil, and whether it supplies a named marker or only a fresh-garlic equivalent. A marker stated for one preparation should not be assumed to exist at the same level in another.
Odourless is a preference-related description, not a measurement of clinical potency. A smaller, defined extract amount can be easier to interpret than a very large equivalent figure with no explanation of the actual material inside the capsule.
Illustrative label arithmetic
There is no established universal supplemental garlic dose. Suppose a fictional capsule contains 250 mg extract and claims a 10:1 input ratio. Its stated raw-material equivalent is 2,500 mg, but the swallowed extract remains 250 mg. Neither number alone reveals the amount of an individual sulfur compound.
If a separate marker is explicitly standardized at 1%, 250 mg × 0.01 equals 2.5 mg of that marker. Keep the marker name alongside the number. Do not compare it numerically with an unrelated marker on another garlic product.
Bleeding, stomach symptoms and skin injury
Garlic supplements can increase bleeding risk, particularly alongside anticoagulants or aspirin; tell the clinician managing surgery about their use. Oral side effects include odour, abdominal symptoms and allergy. Raw garlic placed on skin can cause chemical burns.
Supplemental amounts in pregnancy or breastfeeding need separate assessment from normal culinary use. A food-origin claim does not remove the need to check a concentrated preparation or its accompanying ingredients.

Choose a comparison that answers your question
For a hypothetical ₹900 bottle of 90 capsules with a three-capsule serving, the cost is ₹30 for each of 30 servings. Record the preparation and declared marker beside that cost. Comparing only fresh-garlic equivalents can reward an impressive number instead of useful disclosure.
A study-linked product needs a matching preparation, not merely the word garlic in both places. Note capsule burden, odour preferences and any extra ingredients. Those practical differences can matter without implying that one brand delivers a proven superior medical outcome.
Common questions
Is an odourless product weaker?
Odour alone cannot establish effectiveness. The preparation, composition and relevant evidence are more informative than the presence or absence of smell.
Can a garlic supplement replace prescribed cholesterol medicine?
No. Small changes in a risk marker do not establish equivalent cardiovascular protection or justify stopping prescribed treatment.
Take the knowledge with you.
Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
