Plant protein

Check the source, the blend and the actual protein.

Plant protein supplements concentrate protein from plant ingredients. A vegan label describes ingredient suitability; it does not by itself reveal protein density, amino acid composition, taste or evidence for a particular product.

Three things to remember

  1. Plant-based diets can support resistance-training gains when protein intake is adequate.
  2. Different plant sources and combinations have different amino acid profiles.
  3. Vegan does not mean allergen-free, and powder grams are not protein grams.

Sources are not interchangeable labels

Soy, pea, rice and other sources can appear alone or in blends. The useful question is which proteins the finished product contains and in what quantities. Combining sources can complement their amino acid profiles, but the word blend does not show its proportions. Avoid reading plant protein as one uniform ingredient: a pea isolate and a flavoured mixed-food powder are different purchasing comparisons.

Evidence for training adaptation

A 12-week study compared habitual vegans and omnivores undertaking resistance training with protein intake matched at about 1.6 g/kg/day. Muscle and strength gains were similar. This involved young men and particular diets and supplements, so it does not prove every plant powder equals every dairy powder. It does challenge the blanket claim that a plant-based diet cannot support muscle gain.

Protein quality is outcome-specific

In a separate short trial in older men, adding pea or whey increased measured muscle protein synthesis, while collagen did not. The endpoint was a physiological response, not a guarantee of long-term strength or disability prevention. When a packet advertises a score or amino acid profile, keep that information alongside actual protein quantity and relevant human outcomes rather than converting it into a universal best-protein ranking.

A transparent serving calculation

Hypothetically, a 40 g plant-powder serving declares 28 g protein. Its protein density is 70%. A 30 g serving of another product with 24 g protein is 80%. The first provides more protein per stated serving but less per gram of powder. Neither number alone establishes the preferred product: compare the amount you intend to use, the complete ingredient list and the taste you can tolerate.

Allergens and dietary suitability

Soy is a food allergen, and other ingredients or manufacturing warnings can matter even on a vegan product. Read the full label rather than assuming that dairy-free means suitable for every allergy. If a blend adds vitamins, herbs or stimulants, evaluate those separately. The research on a straightforward protein source does not automatically establish the suitability of every fortified version.

Cost per equal protein amount

Suppose a ₹1,800 pack has 25 servings at 28 g protein: 700 g protein in total. Its hypothetical cost per 25 g protein is about ₹64.29. A ₹1,600 pack with 20 servings at 24 g contains 480 g, costing about ₹83.33 per 25 g. This standardizes quantity, not digestibility or clinical results. Ingredient disclosure, tolerability and dietary requirements remain separate parts of the decision.

Common questions

Must every plant protein be a blend?

No. A blend is one way to combine sources; its usefulness depends on composition and the wider diet.

Does vegan mean dairy-allergy safe?

It does not replace checking the full ingredient and allergen information, including cross-contact warnings.

WHEN YOU’RE READY TO COMPARE

Take the knowledge with you.

Compare the same form, active amount and intended use before comparing price. India and International listings have separate filters; some categories may have no listings in one market. Listings do not establish local stock or a need for a supplement. Shopping disclosures appear on product pages.
